Title: Propaganda, ideology, and inferentialism

Abstract:

                  In How Propaganda Works, Jason Stanley presents an account of propaganda. An important part of Stanley’s account is his view of flawed ideological beliefs. In presenting his view, he presents some objections to the inferential role theory of meaning. In this talk, I will respond to Stanley’s criticisms of the inferential role theory of meaning. Once these criticisms have been addressed, I will present some ways in which the inferential role theory might offer useful conceptual tools for a theory of propaganda.
